Musician Edwyn Collins had a long and successful career, with his band Orange Juice and as a solo artist and producer. But in 2005 he had 2 massive strokes which left him unable to speak, walk, read or write. He has had to learn to do everything again from scratch. Having lost the use of the right hand side of his body he had to begin to train himself to use his left hand. Part of his therapy was to draw birds. He drew a different British bird each day and continues to do so.
Edwyn is now recording and performing his music again and has recently released a new album, which features his birds on the cover. Fabric and wallpaper have also been produced using the birds as a repeat pattern (see below).
There is an exhibition of Edwyn's bird drawings at the Idea Generation Gallery in Shoreditch from 26th February to 6th March 2011. Admission is free. You can also visit his website to find out more about Edwyn's work.
