Stanley Spencer and the English Garden

Stanley Spencer was probably best known as a war artist and for his depictions of biblical scenes set in his home town of Cookham, Surrey. Spencer also recorded, in intricate detail, many of his neighbours' gardens and these paintings now stand as a record of the English suburban scene. Compton Verney in South Warwickshire is staging an exhibition of these paintings over the summer. It starts on the 25th June and goes on until 2nd October. It's expensive to get in (£10.50 even as a student) so make the most of the day and visit the sculpture gardens and the permanent collection of folk art while your there.
