What's on in Edinburgh

There are plenty of galleries to visit during The Edinburgh Film Festival. The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art has a great permanent collection of painting and sculpture such as 'Vulcan' by Eduardo Paolozzi, pictured above. In addition there are two special exhibitions, both of which are free.
Jeff Koons is one of the best known contemporary artists. Working in the traditions of Pop Art, he takes images from popular culture, such as cartoon characters and celebrities to create his large scale sculpture. He divides opinion, some think his work is an insightful reflection of modern life, but others see him as kitsch and shallow.
August Sander was one of the most influential photographers of the early 20th Century. He captured ordinary people and their lives. Living and working in Germany during the Nazi era, his portraits did not meet with that regime's perceptions of the 'ideal' German citizen. Much of his work was destroyed or confiscated and his own son died a political prisoner. These pictures now give us an insight into our own immediate past.
