Tacita Dean at Tate Modern

Tacita Dean has been given the prestigious commission of filling the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern. Her work, simply entitled 'Film', is now on view to the public. Dean made the work using techniques, such as double exposure, glass-matte painting and hand tinting, that go back to the early days of cinema. "It was a hell of a process. When I got the film back I didn't know what I was going to get." As digital technology becomes the norm, Tacita is concerned about the declining availability of film and the closure of photochemical labs. "I suddenly realised we are just about to lose this really beautiful medium we created 125 years ago," she said.
