David Hockney is getting a lot of coverage in the Arts press at the moment, due to his new show 'A Bigger Picture' which starts at the Royal Academy on the 21st January. See examples of works, which will include large scale paintings, ipad pieces and short film pieces, on The Guardian website.
Hockney caused some controversy recently when he criticised artists who did not make their own work. A quote on the exhibition publicity says "All the works here were made by the artist himself, personally." This as been interpreted as a direct comment on Damien Hirst, who also has a big show later this year at Tate Modern. Hirst uses assistants to help him realise his ideas. Hockney's comments reflect Grayson Perry's views on craftmanship (see previous posts). Read more about Hockney's views here and Damien Hirst's response to the issues raised here.
