You can see Astley Castle if you travel from Arbury to Fillongly, just off to the right past Seeswood Pool. It has a long fascinating history spanning nearly 1000 years. In the 16th century, Lady Jane Grey is supposed to have lived there (she claimed to be Queen for nine days after our own Edward VI died, before she was executed for being so upperty) and George Eliot knew it well and used it as inspiration in her writing. But since a fire in the 1970s, it has been a wreck.
Architects Witherford Watson Mann, who were responsible for the Whitechapel Gallery extension, have renovated the castle and it can been now rented as a holiday home. Read a review of the finished design on the Guardian website.
