Images of Ruin at the Whitworth Gallery

The Whitworth Gallery is currently showing a series of artworks that looks at ruined architecture and our relationship with it. "No encounter or engagement with ruins is ever just about the past. Ruins are vehicles for time travel in the imagination." 'Building on Things: images of ruin and renewal' is an exhibition which brings together the work of artists ranging from Turner to Patrick Caulfield, Tacita Dean and Anne Desmet (pictured above).

Jane and Louise Wilson have been inspired by the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. 'Toxic Camera' is a film about a film. Immediately following the disaster Vladimir Shevchenko took his camera and filmed the disaster area.  His camera became so highly radioactive that it was subsequently buried on the outskirts of Kiev. 'Atomgrad' is a series of large scale photos of deserted buildings in the city of Pripyat, 30km from Chernobyl.
